I had to give myself a little headshake and attitude adjustment over the weekend. Considering myself lucky to have “the problem” of having many people in my life that I love and care about deeply, I found myself almost making a poor decision this weekend that I wasn’t proud of.
Life sometimes gives us moments of opportunity to spend time with our loved ones – the challenge is that I find it is often easier to prioritize them in sickness over times in health.
This weekend loved ones that I don’t get to see every day invited me over to an easy dinner (no special occasion) before heading out to listen to some live music. I said no, I had started a new position with a new company and wanted to spend some time “studying” the new content, being able to relax and focus on some of the new learning, and just felt that it was important to me to be prioritizing some of that for the next few of months. To be clear, this extra time wasn’t even an expectation of my employer, just something I was putting on to myself.
It was a relatively easy no to dinner – I had seen them just last weekend at a family wedding and was going to be seeing them later that evening at the music event.
Then I paused
I listened to my heart
And I thought “What the hell am I doing?!?!”
These are people I love. People that I would drop anything for to go and see them in the hospital (and felt the need to do so earlier this year when one of them was in hospital). So why, when I had the opportunity, would I waste it and not gather more memories with them in health.
I don’t want to be a friend in sickness without being a friend in health. That’s too hard – it leaves too much regret for not spending more time with them gathering the memories in the good time. Don’t get me wrong, it’s important to me to be able to have the opportunity to be with those I love in sickness as much as it is in health, but sometimes it takes a little more of a push to remind myself to be with them in health.
And so, if you have been with me this long, today my wish for you is to “force yourself” to go and spend time with someone you love that you may not always prioritize spending that time with. Maybe someone a little further outside of your everyday circle, but someone you would drop everything for if they were sick. Make one more memory with them in health!
With love,
Glenna
